Mammary tumour care

Mammary tumour diagnosis and surgery planning

PetYaari helps dog parents understand mammary lumps, diagnostic workup, staging, surgery planning, histopathology review and follow-up care. Early veterinary examination is important when a female dog develops a lump, swelling, discharge or growth along the mammary chain.

Procedure

Diagnosis and treatment pathway

Dog mammary tumours can be benign or malignant, and early detection plus surgery can improve outcomes. PetYaari uses examination, diagnostics and surgery planning to decide the right next step.

Spaying before early heat cycles greatly reduces mammary tumour risk, but any dog with a new lump should still be examined promptly.

1

Clinical examination

The veterinarian checks all mammary glands, local skin, lymph nodes and general health rather than focusing only on the visible lump.

2

Sampling and staging

FNAC, biopsy, chest imaging, ultrasound or blood tests may be used to understand tumour type, spread risk and anaesthesia readiness.

3

Surgical removal

Treatment may involve lumpectomy, removal of one gland, regional mastectomy or mammary-chain surgery depending on the case.

4

Histopathology review

The removed tissue can be sent for histopathology so the team can understand tumour behaviour and follow-up needs.

5

Recovery and monitoring

Post-operative care includes pain control, wound protection, activity restriction and monitoring for recurrence or additional lumps.

Surgery planning

Mammary tumour surgery planning

Any new lump, fast-growing swelling, ulcerated mass, bleeding, discharge, pain, appetite loss or breathing difficulty should be discussed with the clinic promptly. Call before visiting if the mass is bleeding or your dog seems weak.

Before surgery

  • Vet examines the lump size, location, texture, skin ulceration and lymph nodes
  • History includes age, spay status, heat cycles, growth speed and appetite or breathing changes
  • FNAC, biopsy, bloodwork, chest X-ray or ultrasound may be discussed before surgery
  • Surgery type is planned based on whether one lump, multiple glands or a mammary chain is involved

Recovery care

  • Use an e-collar and prevent licking or scratching the incision
  • Give pain medicine and antibiotics exactly as prescribed
  • Restrict running, jumping and rough play until the incision heals
  • Attend follow-up for incision check, suture removal and histopathology discussion

Signs, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment

Signs to watch

Lumps along the mammary chain

Firm pea-sized nodules or larger swellings can appear along the glands on the underside of the abdomen.

Signs to watch

Ulceration or discharge

Bleeding, pus, broken skin, foul smell or painful swelling can suggest an advanced or infected mass.

Signs to watch

Growth or multiple masses

Fast growth, multiple lumps or masses fixed to deeper tissue should be assessed quickly.

Signs to watch

Systemic warning signs

Lethargy, appetite loss, weight loss, coughing or breathing difficulty may require wider staging and urgent care.

Risk factors

Unspayed female dogs

Hormone exposure during heat cycles increases risk. Early spaying greatly reduces mammary tumour risk.

Risk factors

Age over seven years

Older dogs can be at higher risk, especially when they were not spayed early.

Risk factors

Breed and genetics

Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Indian Spitz, Poodles and English Setters are commonly noted as more prone breeds.

Risk factors

Obesity and overall health

Body condition and general health matter for both risk discussion and anaesthesia planning.

Treatment planning

Benign tumours

Small benign masses may be treated with surgical removal, followed by histopathology and monitoring.

Treatment planning

Malignant tumours

More aggressive tumours may need wider surgery, staging and discussion of chemotherapy or oncology referral.

Treatment planning

Mastectomy options

Surgery can range from local lump removal to regional or chain mastectomy depending on tumour spread and location.

Treatment planning

Follow-up care

Follow-up checks help monitor incision healing, pathology results, recurrence risk and any new lumps.
