How long do dog periods last?

By Dr Sajeed Mohd

A dog’s heat cycle typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks, though it can vary a bit depending on the dog breed. During that time, you might notice: Swelling of the vulva, bloody or straw-colored discharge, more frequent urination, behavioral changes like being more affectionate or restless. The discharge tends to be heavier in the first week or so and then tapers off. If it’s your dog’s first heat, it can be a bit unpredictable, but it gets more regular with time. If you’re not planning to breed her, it’s worth talking to your vet about spaying, it can prevent unwanted litters and reduce health risks like certain cancers and infections. Dogs don’t have periods in the same way humans do, but they do go into heat, which is part of dog heat cycle. This usually happens about twice a year. for more queries consult vet at petyaari pet clinic.
