Description / Action:
Staphban ointment has mupirocin 2.0% w/w in a water-soluble base. It has antimicrobial property and its unique structure is different from any other class of antibiotics. Mupicin works by blocking protein synthesis in bacteria by inhibiting enzymes helping in RNA synthesis (isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase). Mupirocin is produced by fermentation of Pseudomonas fluorescens. This mode of action makes mupirocin different from other classes of antibiotics and there is no cross-resistance with gentamicin, lincomycin, chloramphenicol, neomycin, erythromycin, novobiocin, penicillin, tetracycline, and streptomycin. Mupirocin is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
